Description

Wonderful set of 4 Arts and Crafts Hand-Painted Dessert Plates, pre-WWI, as they are marked Bavaria and Austria. Once the war broke out, artists began acquiring their china blanks from France. These are approx. 7.75" wide, perfect for dessert or display. Fine condition. Even the gold rims are nice (always the first things to become worn). See pics! Three dessert plates are marked "Thomas Sevres Bavaria," in the style the company used from 1908 to 1939. And one is marked MZ Austria, whose double eagle mark seen here was used only up to 1909, which is how I'm dating all four to 1909. All four plates have been photographed individually. From the 1870s to the 1920s, painting china became a popular American past-time--and a business for those women who taught the skill-- especially during the Arts & Crafts movement. 19th Century examples are usually naturalistic paintings of flowers covering the whole plate, while early 20th Century examples are often "conventionalized," more graphic in design with a repeating pattern such as we see here. Fully fired white "blanks" were often obtained from fine German and French china companies. The artist would paint them and then re-fire them so the designs became permanent. These are particularly striking examples of the art and a unique addition to any Arts and Crafts or painted china collection.
